large handle-bar mustache all of his adult life. Following a disasterous
flood of the Susquehana River in June 1889, Michael was forced to build a new
home for his family on the mountainside in Charlton, Pa. along what is now
Church Hill Rd.. He died of Myocarditis in his home at age 68.

briefly tried his hand at farming & operating a country store until moving to
Missouri in 1930 where he worked for Ajax Pipeline Co.. In 1958 Lester moved
to Oklahoma City & worked for Cities Service Pipeline Co.. He retired in 1965
& lived his remaining years there until his death in 1973 from heart disease.

Life events: Mark was born on 13-April-1948 at Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Strangely, that is the same name of the hospital in Denver where Mark died. There was only eighteen months difference between Mark’s age and his brother, Richard’s age . Consequently, the two brothers grew up to be very close. During high school both brothers shared the same close circle of friends. Both Richard and Mark became very active and competitive in motorcycle racing. They first became involved in motto -cross races held out north of Amarillo at the Canadian River and then became involved in flat-track motorcycle racing using a steel protected shoe and on a more traditional oval race track. They traveled to compete in races held in Lubbock, Texas , Clovis, New Mexico, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and locally in Amarillo, Texas. Mark and Richard won several awards during their racing careers.

Mark was also an outstanding high school wrestler. While attending Tascosa High School, he won several championship awards in his weight division. Mark was always a fierce competitor but could also be a gracious loser as well as a kind and conside rate winner. The current head wrestling coach at Tascosa High School is Johnny Cobb who also wrestled on the same team with Mark. Each year at the end of the wrestling season, Johnny Cobb honors an outstanding wrestler at Tascosa in a special cere mony by awarding the recipient the "Mark Speed Outstanding Wrestler Award". This has been a very touching honor bestowed in Mark’s name and memory. He and Johnny Cobb were also very close friends growing up together.

After high school, Mark enrolled in Amarillo Junior College and later in Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. While in Lubbock, he worked part-time for the Texas Highway Department and pursued a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. This was no easy fea t because he and his wife, Marilyn Thomason Speed, were raising a new son, Sean Mark Speed, at the same time Mark was going to school full time. Sean was born in Amarillo on 9-July-1968. After he graduated from Texas Tech, he continued to work fo r the Texas Highway Department. Mark and Marilyn’s second son, Chad Edward Speed, was born on17-January-1972.

In 1973, Mark applied and was offered a position as a Civil Engineer for the City of Corpus Christi, Texas. He worked under the Water Department as a water treatment plant supervisor and became absorbed about learning the business of water treatme nt and water distribution. He was highly respected by not only those who worked for him at the treatment plants but also by his own supervisor and department head.

During the years at Corpus Christi, Mark and his family grew from two sons to two sons and a daughter. Wendy Leigh Speed was born on 9-May-1976. These were years when Mark and his family made close, long lasting friendships with neighbors next do or to them known as the Pacheco family. Michael and Inez Pacheco and their family of three boys, Michael Jr., Ricky, and Ray, and one girl, Francis (called Franny). Became life long friends with the Mark and his family. The two families went on be ach gatherings together and became deeply involved in bicycle motto-cross racing with their blended family of kids.

In 1979, Mark was interviewed and hired to manage the Water Treatment Department for the City of Thornton, Colorado, a suburb near Denver. Although the life in Corpus Christi and the family outings to the gulf beach were close to all their hearts , Mark had always loved the mountains. He saw this move as both an opportunity to live near the mountains and to move into a higher management position in municipal water treatment. These two goals were realized when he moved to Thornton, Colorad o with his family.

Life in Colorado was exciting and challenging for Mark over the next several years. He continued to be active in bicycle racing with his children and traveled with them all across the state as well as out of state to compete in the sport. Snow ski ing became the new family sport and could be done on the weekends or during the evenings where lighted ski slopes were available. Mark was very devoted to his family and spent many hours working on bikes or repairing skis for the kids.

Starting in 1986, Mark began to have managerial disagreements with members of the Thornton city administration. The disagreements centered around water policy issues and personality differences between himself and a newly hired city manager. Th e conflicts began to take a toll on Mark by creating an environment of stress and job pressure. About this same time, he and his wife, Marilyn, were having serious relationship difficulties which ultimately ended up in divorce in 1987.

This was a dark period for Mark because of the continued unresolved job pressure and the failure of his marriage. He ultimately resigned from his position at Thornton and began to seek employment elsewhere. He remained very close to many of the em ployees of the City of Thornton with whom he had made good friends. Many of the same friends also resigned and sought employment with other employers. This bond of friendship manifested itself through the small group gatherings they would all hav e each week at either a local bar or at someone’s home. Mark, at one time, told me that these friends were the people who helped him cope through this difficult time of his life.

In 1988, Mark and Sarah Orton were married. Sarah had worked with Mark at the City of Thornton in another city department They had become close through this period of job dissatisfaction and became closer following his resignation from the city . It was several months prior to the wedding that Mark was diagnosed with cancer and also within months after being employed by the consulting firm of Puckorius & Associates in Evergreen, Colorado. He and Sarah had just rented and moved into a rus tic mountain home in Evergreen, Colorado to be closer to his work.

Mark’s struggle with his cancer was nothing short of heroic. He remained a loving father and brother right up until his death on 7-March-1989. Throughout his life, he was kind and considerate of the feelings of others and many close friends who ca me to Denver to be there at his memorial service.
