Branch Seven of Gartnafuaran – the Portnellan Stewarts

Possible Descendants of John Stuart in Portisland

Compiled by Belinda Dettmann

In Stewarts of the South, Branch Seven of the Gartnafuaran family was called the Port-an-ealan Stewarts.  Their farm, also called Portnellan,  meaning Port of the Island, was in Strathgartney, on the north bank of Loch Venacher. It was once the property of the family of Perth, then passed to the Earl of Moray.  When owned by the Perth family it had been held in tack (i.e. lease) by the Stewarts of Annat.

A second farm called Portnellan is situated in Strathgartney on the north bank of Loch Katrine. It is not mentioned as a Stewart residence in Stewarts of the South, but its existence should be kept in mind if you come across the location in local records.

The Stewarts who lived in Portnellan on Loch Venacher from about 1720 to 1820 were of the Gartnafuaran family.  The Stewarts of Annat had been tacksmen there in earlier years, leasing Portnellan directly from the owner, but the Stewarts of the Gartnafuaran line were less exalted, probably being tenants or cottars.

The Annat Stewarts still had families living in the vicinity of Portnellan – at Auchnahard (Duncan, Robert and Alexander Stewart, Nos  9, 10 and 11 in Callander parish), while Duncan Stewart, Tenant of Lanrick and Duncraggan (No 15) and John Stewart, Tenant of Cuilanteogle and Taranduin (No 17, son of Duncan Stewart Auchnahard) are also of the Annat and Ardvorlich family. I haven’t sorted them all out yet – if I do they will be added to the ‘Stewarts in Annat’ file.

Stewarts of the South described the Portnellan Stewarts thus:

John Stewart, late tenant there, left four sons, John his successor pays £40 of rent,  James a Gardener in North America, George a gardener in Northampton in England, Donald parochial schoolmaster in Doune and Student of Divinity.

Donald, brother to John also tenant in above place left four sons.  John his successor, James and George Gardeners in England, all unmarried, Rent £40.

George, their uncle, a Shoemaker in Callander has one son unmarried.  This finishes the Stewarts of Port an Ealan, all well-doing and thrifty men.

In the section on present tenants in Balquhidder:

Missed in the Parish of Callander the two farms of Portnellan, Loch Vennacherside between Cuilanteagle and Miltown.

No 23 or 24 Where two John Stewarts, cousins, Tenants of Portnellan of the Gartnafuaran family, at least they say so.  Industrious men, and pay each £42.  The Earl of Murray’s property, formerly Perth.

The following lineage is NOT PROVEN but is put up for discussion.

Generation One

1.  John STUART; married Agnes McVey 29 Jul 1729 Port of Menteith, Perth.

Children of John Stuart and Agnes McVey all born Port of Menteith, Perth, were as follows:

           2.        i.    Thomas in Portisland, christened 2 Aug 1730; married Janet Simmie.

                      ii.    William; christened Apr 1732.

           3.      iii.    John, christened 3 May 1736.

Children of Thomas Stewart in Portisland and Janet Simmie were as follows:

Children of John Stuart and an unknown spouse were:

I have assumed that John (6) is the son of John (3), although there is no direct evidence for this. If John (6) is the cousin of John (4), as asserted in Stewarts of the South, then this seems the most likely scenario.
