August 13

The Session met and constituted, compeared Donald Stewart and Christian Cameron both in Lianoch of Glenbuky relative to the scandal raised upon them which the session delayed to next Sabbath and ordered chief officer to cile in Jas. McInly re Mary McKiech in Lianoch Sabbath next.

1760

Balquidder Kirktown March 24th 1760

The which day and place Colin Campbell of Edinchip for his own interest and own factor for~.

Archibald McNab of Newtown Mungo Campbell of Crigans Patrick Mcvean of Ledchrioch Duncan McLaren of Cregruie and Master Finlay Fergusson Minister all heretors in Chossafield? of Balquidder and Robert Stewart John Stewart Hugh Drummond Elders being met and considering the hazard and danger of the Kirk bell being broke by ignorant men or witless boys that rings the bells at the time of burials.  Therefore the said heritors and elders who signed the minutes relative to this affair of the days date considering the poverty of the box for serving the poor and supporting the fabrick of the Kirk and oyr (other) publick services and to prevent any accident that may happen to the bell do order and appoint in ~ill time coming the driveled? go of ringing of the bell shall not be allowed by the Beadle at time of burials.  But only to such and shall pay sixpence as an additional rate to the use of the box and the oyr sixpence allowed himself for making the grasse and attending the bell and this act to mi~itate or take effect against these only that ask or use or causes the bell to be rung and further order this act and resolution to be accorded in the Kirk Session books.

 

July 20

This day the edict Dugal Stewart in Tullich and Donald Fergusson in Monchal more ~ in Order to their being ordained Elders.

 

August 12th

The Session met and constitute.

The edict of Donald Fergusson and Dugal Stewart was called returnd? and no objections made and Duncan McNab that was formerly one of the elders of Comrie was this day admitted as one of the elders of this parish and the oys two ordained and all of them were exhorted to be faithful and usefull in that service.

Octr 9th

The Session met.  Compeared before them Jat. McKinnies confessed that she was with child and gave up Alexander Stewart in Innernenty as the father of her child.  The session ordered her to serve the repenting stool and being dismissed after prayers.

 

Octr 30th

The Session met and constituted, compeared before them Margaret King in Gartnafuaran who brought forth a child and gave up Alexr Stewart in Glenfinglas as father of it and she said Alexr writes to the minister owning the child and promises an equal proportion in nurishing the child and likewise the Kirk dues.

 

1764

March 30 The Session met and constitute pro ro nata.

Elders present Hugh Drummond, Dugal Stewart and the Minister.

Margaret Fisher late servant to Mary Stewart Widow in Lichscridan now in Tulloch have brought forth a child being cited, called and compeared and being interrogated who was the father of her child and seriously exhorted to tell the truth she confessed that Robert Stewart her Land Lady’s son was the father of her child and that she had no other and that the time of the birth answered and agreed to the time of his being guilty with her in their own shealling house but could no condescend upon the particular day or week and she said Robert Stewart being cited called compeared and being interrogated confessed guilt with her but says that the birth of the child differs from the time of the guilt in the common reckoning six weeks and two or three days.

 

Aprile 15th

The Session met and constituted

Compeared before them Margaret Fisher and adhere to here former confession fathering her child upon the said Robert Stewart and that he was guilty with her in the shealing about seven or eight days before the rest of the Nighbours in order to stay there and that she is willing and offers to free herself from every other man but himself.  The said Robert Stewart also compeared own guilt but fixes upon the time of that guilt a fortnight before Lambass last 1763 Aprile 22d.  This day Margt Fisher compeared before the session craving that her oath may be taken that she has no others father to her child but Robert Stewart in Lichscridan alleging that the sheriff at Killin would not sustain the process agt she said Robert without an extract of her oath and he being cited and called compeared not but only his two brethren compeared pleading a delay of taking the woman’s oath.  The session considering the complex case did order a session to meet here tomorrow about two o’clock in order to proceed to take the woman’s oath if no relative objection be made certifying that the said Robert absenting himself will not be sustained as an objection.

 

Aprile 23rd

This day compeared before the session Margaret Fisher and the Session considering the altrication between them delayed her oath until the would ~eed before them Jas Stewart in Cuilt Robert Stewart in Stronslany Dugal Stewart’s wife in Tulloch John Stewart in Tulloch and his wife.

 

Aprile 29th

The Session met and constituted. .The party ap~ being before them but Robert Stewart did not compear and his Broyr Jas compeared and the said Robert refuses guilt with the woman in the sheal house but did not refuse tull Monday 23d of Aprile as marked in the above session minutes but fixes on that guile on she~straith.

Compeared Dougall Stewart’s wife in Tulloch and declared that she spoke to Robert Stewart the supposed father of the child that she desired him to go west and see the child and that he refused to go to Tulloch but said if the woman is party would agree.  They would agree on an hour hence with them.

 

1765

August 11th

This day the edict of John Stewart and Duncan Fergusson in Laggan being proclaimed in order to be elders.

 

Novr 3

The session met compeared before them Margaret Stewart in Cuilairh being interrogate who was the father of her child.  She gave up Duncan Drummond at the Mill of Callar father to it and affirms before them that she has no other father to her child but he.  This day compeared the said Duncan who denies that he had nothing ado with her except about the time that Donald Campbel pensioner was married, which time does not agree to the birth of the child.  They were both cited ap~d acta again first Sabbath.

 

Novr 10th

Compeared before the session the said Margt. Stewart and adheres to her former confession in fathering her child upon the said Duncan Drummond and says that he was guilty with her about ~ool which time Duncan does not agree to being dismissed.

 

Novr 24th

The session met and compeared before them Margt. Stewart in Cuilairn and likewise Duncan Drummond.  She affirms to her former confession fathering her child upon the said Duncan and condescends that he told her a story about John Roy Mcnie in Monchalmore at the time of their being guilty together which Duncan declares to be false.

 

1766

February 13th

The session met and constitute.  This day the Minister represented to the session that he while catechizing in the Brea did examine Catharine Stewart daughter to Robert Stewart in Innernent if she was with child confessed she was and gave up Jas. Stewart schoolmaster in the Brea father to it.

 

March 16th

Compeared before the session Jas. Stewart schoolmr in the Brea being interrogate if he was father to Catharine Stewart’s child confessed he was, being dismissed after prayers.

 

June 8

From James Stewart schoolmaster in Innerlochraig mor for himself and party Katharine Stewart daughter to Robert Stewart in the wester half of Easter Innernenty.  6-.

 

July 19th

This day compeared before them Marjery Stewart being interrogate if she was with child confessed she was to one Archd Stewart servant to Ballicholish in Apin.

 

Novr 2d

Compeared before them Margaret Stewart in Cuilarn adheres to her former confession in fathering her child upon Duncan Drummond in Callar.

Aprile 23d

Margery Stewart who fell in fornication to Arcd Stewart servant to Balcholish removed the scandal and payd her fine.

 

Balquidder Kirktown June 26th 1767

This day the session met and constituted, compeared according to appointment before them Janet McLaren in adhering to her former confessions in her being frequently guilty in fornication with Robert Stewart in Lichscridan during the year that she served him and that she came away from his service at Martenmass last and brought forth the child about the latter end of March or the beginning of Aprile last.  Robert Stewart denies the charge and refuses any guilt with her.  further says that he is able to depone that he does no know whether she be man or woman but that she went in a woman’s clothes and that he was not alone with her in the fields at the time of plucking the ferns or any other wok whatsomever and was never in her bed nor she in his bed in the house and was never with her in any suspected place.  Janet McLaren further declares at Auchtow wedding, Candlemass 1766 were leaning in a bed there before the party  were bedded, hogging, kissing and caressing one another.  The session concluded and appointed some particular witnesses to be before them again Sabbath.

 

June ___

The session met and constituted, compeared before them the above parties, James Campbell in Auchleskine aged 23 years and upwards as cited, called compeared deponed purged of partial coneel? and malice deponed that upon Michalmass Day last he went to Lichscridan and saw Robert Stewart and Janet McLaren both foresaid plucking ferns and no other body with them but themselves and heard Janet McLaren say to the said Robert Stewart that she was wrong (in Irish air a dochair) which the deponent took for meaning that she was with child and likewise told his neighbour that his opinion was she was with child and that Duncan McLaren in Lichscsridan he saw nearest to them and was about fifty or sixty paces from them and this is the truth as he shall answer to God.

Mary McGregor in Kirktown cited called compeared aged about 50 years purged partial coneil and malice Depones that she went to Lichscridan summer last in time of the Shealing to Robert Stewart’s house there and saw nobody in the house but did see the gridle whether on the fire or on the floor but is positive the coul was on the gridle and that bread was somewhere about it.

1770

Janry 14th

Duncan McLarin Middle Achtow paid for his ~ and partner to Robert Stewart in Lechscridan.

 

James Stewart taylor paid his fins of fornication and removed the scandal.

 

1772

The session met and constitute.  John Stewart elder was chosen to attend the Presbetry of Dunblane.

 

May 31st

The session met and constitute.  There was read a letter from Mr. William Grant Minr at Kilmanvaig informing the session of the pregnancy and delivery of Janet Kenedy upon the first day of March last and at the same time informing the session of her having been interrogated and giving up John Stewart son to James Stewart Vintner at Lochearnhead as father of her child whereupon the session called them both confronted and examined them which he she said John Stewart absolutely refused of his ever having been guilty with the said Janet Kenedy and she on the other hand adhered to her former confession whereupon the session agreed to refer the whole cause for advice to the Revd Presbetry of Dunblane.

 

June 12th

Janet Kenedie who fathers her child upon John Stewart son to James Stewart at Lochearnhead paid her fine of fornication 3/0.

 

June 30th

The session met and constitute.  Upon citation, compeared before them Christian Carmichael in Cuilt being interrogated if she was with child and exhorted to tell the truth as in the presence of God, gave up Duncan Stewart in Cuilt as father of her child and condescends upon the Latter Fare of Stirling as the time when the guilt was committed whereupon the session ordered their officer to cite before them the said Duncan Stewart at their next meeting and summoned the said Christian Carmichael aperd acto that they might both be confronted.

 

Octr 20th

Compeared before our session Duncan Stewart in Cuilt owned to have been guilty in fornication with Christian Carmichael relapse in fornication desires the Minr to baptise the child as he was the father of it.

 

Decr 19th

Duncan Stewart in Cuilt payd his fine of fornication.  Christian Carmichael in Cuilt his party.  3:0:0

May 9th

James Stewart in Tulloch and Jean Ferguson paid their ___ of fornication.

In John Stewart’s hands.

 

May 10th

Duncan Ferguson and Mary Stewart paid their fine of fornication.  9:0:0

 

1773

Jan 24th

John Stewart in Tulloch was nominated and appointed Treasurer for the session.  This day the session being met and constituted John Stewart elder in Lianoch was chosen, nominated and elected to attend the Presbytery of Dunblane.

 

Aprile 11th

The Session met and constituted.  Compeared Mary Stewart daughter to John Stewart in Monchalturarach declaring her pregnancy and giving up Duncan Ferguson as the father of her child and the session appointed their officer to cite and call before them the said Duncan Ferguson against their next meeting.

 

May 2d

The session being met and constitute Jean Ferguson late in Tulloch being cited called and compeared declaring her pregnancy and delivery of a dead child and at the same time she gave up James Stewart son to Alexander Stewart in Tulloch as father of her child and she now desired to attend their next meeting.

 

May 9th

The sess. met and constitute.  Compeared James Stewart in Tulloch and Jean Ferguson, and the said James Stewart owned his having been guilty with her and confessed his being father to her child.

 

The sess. next proceeded to the affair of Mary Stewart.  Compeared before them Duncan Ferguson and owned his being father to her child.

 

June 6th

The session met and constitute.  Upon citation compeared John Stewart at Lochearnhead and compeared likewise Janet Kenedy after reading the former Minutes the session proceeded to examine the said John Stewart and exhorted him to tell the truth as in the presence of God if ever he had been guilty with her which accusation he absolutely refused, the said Janet Kenedy firmly adheres to her former confession and she declares he was guilty ~ her through ~ Aprile, May and June 1771? in their ~ house at Lochearnhead and ~ says that she told to Helen Campbell her companion that John Stewart was troublesome to her and that it was not easy for her to keep herself from him and the session appoints Helen Campbell to be cited before them at their next meeting and both parties were cited ~ to attend next Sabbath.

 

June 13th

The Session met and constituted.  Compeared John Stewart and Janet Kennedy, he absolutely refuses any guilt with her, she firmly adheres to her former confession in accusing him.  The session proceeded to examine Helen Campbell who had been maid in James Stewart’s house when the guilt was contracted.

 

This day compeared Helen Campbell purged of partial co~l and malice depones that she does not remember if that Janet Kenedy ever told her that John Stewart was troublesome to her or endangered her character, and the deponed being further asked if she observed anything suspicious in the conduct of either Stewart or the other declared she did not and this is the truth as she shall ansr to God declares she cannot merite?

 

June 27th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared John Stewart and was cited apud? acto to attend the Presbytery of Dunblane again Tuesday first the 29th curt.  That John Stewart Elder one of their number was appointed to attend the Presbytery of Dunblane again that die~.

 

Novr 28th

The Session met and constitute.  Donald Reid and Catharine Stewart compeared before them and the session sustained their marriage and fined Stewart six shillings sterling.

 

1774

April 10th

John Ferguson in ~arlarich aged 59 years, married, deponed that James Stewart late of Garnafuaran had a son named Andrew born in the year 1739, and this is the truth as he shall answer to God and declares he cannot write.  signed Colin Campbell, JP.

Catharine McGrigor aged 53 years deponed as former witness but cannot write.  signed Colin Campbell, JP.

 

May 1st

The session met and constituted and certified Andrew Stewart’s age with having before them the above declaration as his name was not found in the Baptizm records.

 

1775

Feb 26th

The session met and constitute.  They did order their officer to summon in before them John Stewart at Lochearnhead against next Sunday.

 

March 4th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared John Stewart at Lochearnhead in consequence of a citation from the session, - a letter from Mr. William Grant Minr at Kilmanivaig, adressed to the Minr of Balquidder and dated at Kilmanivaig 20th Aprile 1772, informing that Janet Kennedie sometime servant with James Stewart at Lochearnhead was delivered of a child on the first day of March 1772 in the parish of Kilmanivaig and being duely interrogate by the session of that parish, declared that John Stewart son to James Stewart at Lochearnhead her late master was the father of her child  was produced by the clerk which letter and the Minute of our session there anent? bearing date May 31st 1772 being this day read in presence of the aforesaid John Stewart, he the said John Stewart judicially acknowledged his being the father of Janet Kennedie’s child before mentioned.  He is summoned aperd actum to attend next session.

 

March 11th

That John Stewart at Lochearnhead was summoned to compear this day before the session but did not appear.

 

Jully 17th

This day Robert Stewart formerly elder in the parish of Comrie was chosen elder here.

 

Decr 10th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared upon citation Catharine McNie in Glenbuckie being interrogate if she is with child confessed she is and gave up Donald Stewart her landlord in Glenfonlays? in the parish of Callendor as father of it.  The session have agreed to write to the session of Callendor anent her confession.

June 30th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared before the session Catharine Maclaren late in Castaran being interrogate if she is with child declared she is and gave up James Stewart in Castaran as father of it.

 

Jully 26th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared James Stewart in Castaran who is accused of being guilty in fornication with Catharine McLaren, he absolutely refuses this accusation, she firmly adheres to her former confession.

 

Septr 13th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared upon citation James Stewart in Castaran and Catharine McLaren.  Also compeared Anna Stewart and Mary McLaren who were present at Catharine McLaren’s delivery, and these two women being indicially asked if the midwife Mary Stewart asked of the said Catharine McLaren if she had given up the real father of her child the said Anna Stewart and Mary McLaren declared that the said midwife refused in giving any assistance until the said Catharine McLaren had pronounced words to the effect might she never be relieved from her present labour if she had not given up the proper father.

 

Decr 8th

Compeared James Stewart in Castaran and Katharine McLaren before the congregation to make satisfaction for their fornication and received a publick m~.

June 15th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared upon citation Margery Stewart in Dallaggan and being interrogate if she is with child declares she is and gives up Donald McLaren late herd in Glenbukie as father of her child and the session do order their officer to cite the said Donald McLaren to compear again Tuesday next and the woman is cited aprid actum to compear also.

 

June 24th

Donald McLaren compeared and owned guilt with Margery Stewart.

Janr 5th

This day Christian Carmichael was absolved for the crime of her fornication with Duncan Stewart in Cuilt and the session have ordered her to give the church fine to her father Duncan Carmichael in Letter on object~ the poor funds.

 

Janr 30th

Donald McLaren and Margery Stewart in Glenbukie paid their fines of fornication.  10 sh ster.

 

August 22d

Compeared before our session Jean Stewart in Cuilt being interrogate if she is with child declares she is and gives up James McLaren in Glenbukie as father of it.

The session met and constituted, compeared James McLaren in Glenbuckie and owned guilt with Jean Stewart.

Sepr 12th

James Stewart in Casteran paid his fines of fornication with Margaret Mclaren.  7/6 ster.

 

Octr 17th

The Session being met and constitute, this day compeared Janet Stewart in Innernenty late in Glenbukie and being interrogate if she is with child declares she is and gives up Donald Stewart in Imer Ewan as father of it and they ordered their officer to cite the said Dond again next Sabbath.

 

Octr 24th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared upon citation Donald Stewart in Emer Ewan of Glenbukie and owned his being father to Janet Stewart’s child.

 

1780

May 6th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared Elisabeth Stewart in easter Auchra being seriously exhorted to tell the truth and interrogate who was the father of her child born upon the 26th day of March last, she judiciously gave up Ralph Rob in Gerah as father of it and the session of this place ordered this Minute to be transmitted to the Kirk Session of Logie that they might cite the said Ralph Rob before them as the guilt was committed in that parish take what steps they see fit.

 

July 16th

The session being met and constitute compeared upon citation James Stewart in Ruskachan and Janet Dow’s accusation was read over to him he acknowledged to be the father of her child.

This day compeared James McLaren in Glenbukie and Katharine Stewart in Cuilt were married here after their clandestine marriage and paid only three sh ster for their proclamation money.  Dues 1 sh ster.

 

Decr 7th

The session being met and constitute compeared Janet Stewart late servant to Robert Blair in Monybrech? in the parish of Port and being seriously exhorted to tell the truth and interrogated if she is with child declares she is and gives up William McLean her fellow servant, son to Hugh McLean in Gartmore as father of it.

 

1783

Aprile 27th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared Elisabeth Stewart late in Kirktown and being interrogated if she is with child declares she is and gives up Donald McLachlen in Kirktown as father of it.

Compeared also the said Donald McLachlen and the above accusation was read over to him.  Confesses guilt.

March 27th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared Anna Campbell a Stroller declares she is with child and voluntarly accuses John Stewart servant to Robert Stewart at Lochearnhead as father of it.

 

April 24th

The session met and constituted.  Compeared John Stewart at Lochearnhead and the above Minute was read over to him.   He absolutely refuses any guilt with the above Anna Campbell.

 

May 22nd

The session met and constituted.  Compeared John Stewart and Anna Campbell .  The said John acknowledged guilt with the said Anna Campbell and the session desired the above parties to find bail and then the child should be baptized.

The session being met and constituted compeared Janet Stewart and being asked if she was with child confessed she is and being seriously exhorted as in the presence of God to declare the truth in giving up the father she delated John McGrigor late in Gartnafuaran and presently working at Dykes upon the estate of Mr. Ferguson of Raith.

The Kirk Session of Balquidder being met and constituted compeared John McGrigor and the Minutes of May 31st current being read to him he confessed himself the father of the said Janet Stewart’s child.

John McGrigor in Gartnfuran and Janet Stewart late in Kirktown of Balquidder paid their ___ of fornication.  15 sh ster.

The Session being met and constituted compeared Ann Stewart in Cuilt and confessed herself with child and being asked the father of her pregnancy and seriously exhorted to tell the truth delated John McGregor son to Duncan McGregor in Cuilt.

Novr 27

The session being met and constituted, compeared Mary Stewart residing in the parish of Aberfoil who had a child by Murdoch Ferguson in this parish, the said Murdoch Ferguson having taken with the child and paid his fine £1-1 and 7/6 on behalf of Mary Stewart.  The said Mary Stewart is allowed to stand to be rebuked before the congregation of Aberfoil.

The Session being met and constituted, John Stewart one of their number was elected their ruling elder to represent them in the Presbytery and ensuing Synod for the current half year.

Which day the Session being met and constituted by the Revd. William Eason.  Present John McEwan, Donald Ferguson, Alexr Buchanan, Hugh McGregor, Duncan McKay, John Stewart, John Reid, Elders.  Sep. 6th.

Then there was laid before the Session a List of Heads of families communicants in the Parish of Balquhidder 4th Augt 1835.  The Session proceeded to revise and correct said List in terms of the Act of Assembly on calls 1836 said List as revised was ordered to lie (according to intimation from the pulpit) with the Session Clerk for a week for inspection by any Parishioner or member of the congregation, the Session agreed to meet at Strathire Village on Monday the 14th curt. at 10 o’clock forenoon the meeting closed with prayer.

Novr 14        

The Session being met and constituted by the Revd William Eason Modr the Lists of Heads of families presented to the Session on 6th Novr was laid before them, the clerk reported that the said list had remained in his hands according to intimation from the pulpit since last Meeting of Sessions.  The Session resumed consideration of said list and found the objections made to Duncan Stewart Lochearnhead No. 35 and Peter Carmichael Strathire Village N. 128 valid.  The Session therefore unanimously agreed to strike the said names from the List of Heads of families according to the terms of the Act of Assembly on calls 1836 and declare thus the said list on this and the three preceding pages to be otherwise correct.  The Elders present having stated that the absent members of Session who were present at former meeting of Session agreed in the propriaty of Petitioning the Presbytery of Dunblane for an opportunity of hearing the Revd Mr., McGregor at least on three different Sabbaths before moderating in the call for the purpose of enabling the Parishioners of Balquhidder to form an impartial judgement on the fitness of his preaching to edify them and their families,  The Session unanimously resolved to petition the Presbytery accordingly the Meeting closed with prayer.                         William Eason Modr

Compeared Louisa McGregor presently residing at Insaig under scandal of fornication with Donald Carmichael Auchtoo having been admonished by the moderator she was absolved there from.

The moderator states that Alexander Stewart Waiter? Lochearnhead had applied to him to be admitted to discipline for the sin of fornication with Janet Stewart daughter of John Stewart Lochearn and states at the same time that the said Alexr Stewart had acknowledged to him that he had been guilty with another woman.

The Kirk Session after considering the matter resolved to defer admitting the said Alexr Stewart to discipline and to refer the case to presbytery of Dunblane for advice.  Closed with prayers.

 

May 13th       The Kirk Session being met and constituted.
