Ancestors of Alexander Stewart, 1st Lord Of Ardvorlich

Generation No. 1

        1.  Alexander Stewart, 1st Lord Of Ardvorlich, born Abt. 1560 in Perthshire, Scotland; died Unknown.  He was the son of 2. James Stewart, 5th Lord Of Baldorran and 3. Daughter Stewart, Of Glenbuckie.  He married (1) Margaret Drummond-Ernoch.  She was born Abt. 1570 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, and died Unknown.  She was the daughter of John Drummond-Ernoch, 3rd Lord Drummond-Ernoch.

Notes for Alexander Stewart, 1st Lord Of Ardvorlich:

Alexander Stewart acquired Ardvorlich ("Ard-mhoirlich" in Gaelic (inflected on first syllable) meaning "the height (or shealing) of the great hollow") in 1580 as a freeholder of the Crown.  He became leader of a clan which, according to Duncan Stewart in his "History of the Stewarts", numbered about three hundred people.  Alexander and his descendants were known by the Gaelic patronymic Mac-mhic-Bhaltair, "sons of the son of Walter".

This is the family that was responsible for the outlawing of the Clan MacGregor.  The story goes like this:

Alexander's brother-in-law, John Drummond, who was keeper of the Royal Forest, found a group of MacGregors poaching in the forest.  As punishment he cut off their ears and sent them home humiliated.  The MacGregor clan rose in defence, killing Drummond and delivering his head to the dinner table of the Ardvorlich Stewarts while Alexander was away.  At the sight of her brother's severed head on her dinner table, Margaret allegedly went nuts and ran off into the woods not to be found for days.  Further legend has it that she was pregnant at the time and the shock sent her into labour and she delivered James Baeg in the forest.

In 1592 Alistair (Alexander) Stewart of Ardvorlich led a cattle raid in Lennox with two bagpipes leading the way.

The Stewarts of Ardvorlich held this estate until the end of the 20th century.

Notes for Margaret Drummond-Ernoch:

Margaret is the sister of Drummond-Enoch who was shocked by the severed head of her brother delivered to her door by the MacGregors.

Generation No. 2

        2.  James Stewart, 5th Lord Of Baldorran, born Abt. 1530 in Baldorran, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland; died Unknown.  He was the son of 4. Walter Stewart, 4th Lord Of Baldorran and 5. Euphemia Reddoch.  He married 3. Daughter Stewart, Of Glenbuckie.

        3.  Daughter Stewart, Of Glenbuckie, born Abt. 1543 in Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland; died Unknown.  She was the daughter of 6. Patrick Stewart, 2nd Lord Of Glenbuckie and 7. Daughter Lecky.

Notes for James Stewart, 5th Lord Of Baldorran:

James sold Baldorran to the Glorat family, although Duncan Stewart's geneaology (1739) indicates that it was his father, Walter, who sold Baldorran to William Livingston of Kilsyth ca. 1524.

John's birth is recorded as illegitimate and later legitimized "under the Great Seal in 1533".  It's not known if he is the child of Euphemia Reddoch before his parents were married or if he is the child of another mother.  Since no record of another mother is anywhere inferred, the first theory is presently preferred.

This may be the same James as described by the Factor of Atholl as follows: "VI Branch Sliochd Sheumais Chrosts or Clachtein not improperly so called they were named Flints from the white stones on the Farm of Leadsgriachan Balqr possessed by them for many generations as tenants a part of Toun Drummadich now Sir John M."  The working assumption is that Leadsgriachan = Lednascriden.

All eleven of these sons died without marrying and without issue.  (Could this have happened in battle?)

vi.    Walter Stewart, born Unknown in Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland; died Unknown.

Notes for Walter Stewart:

Walter's birth is recorded as illegitimate, presumably by a different mother.

Notes for Sir James Mhor Stewart, Of Albany And Baldorran:

James Mohr Stewart was the only male of this family to survive the arrests of King James I of Scotland who intended to have the entire family of Murdac Stewart killed to remove them as a threat to his claim to the throne.

James reacted to his father's imprisonment and trial by leading an attack on the village of Dumbarton, burning it and killing the governor of the castle, Sir John Stewart "The Red Stewart" (who would have been James Mohr's grandfather's half-brother).  Unfortunately this action sealed the fate of James' father and brothers and they were all executed.  Another version of the story has James sacking Dumbarton in revenge after his father and brothers were killed.  Either way, James then fled to Ireland as an outlaw where he later died. He was ancestor to the Stewarts of Ardvorlich.

James and Lady MacDonald, although not married, had several children together.  A pardon was eventually secured allowing for their son, James Baeg, to return from Ireland to Perthshire, Scotland.

He was created Earl of Argyll in 1457, a line which became the Dukes of Argyll in 1701. His youngest son, Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy, gave rise to the Earls of Breadalbane.

Notes for Murdac Stewart, Duke Of Albany:

Murdac Stewart (known in English as "Murdoch") served for a year as justiciar, but after his father, Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, became governor of Scotland, then Murdac was captured by England's King Henry IV and held prisoner.  Murdac was later released by King Henry V in exchange for ransom and prisoner exchange.  Murdac was heir presumptive to the throne of Scotland.  When Murdac's father, Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, died at the age of about eighty-one, then Murdac succeeded him as Duke of Albany and Governor of Scotland.  Murdac lacked his father's political touch and popularity.  Under Murdac's rule lawlessness grew and Murdac's sons were known to be among the worst offenders.  His attempt at governing foundered after four years of futile misrule.  In 1424 King James I, his cousin, returned to Scotland as a "king unleashed" after eighteen years of imprisonment in England.  Since James I's kingship had been at risk while imprisoned in England, he did not intend for it to be threatened upon his return to Scotland. In 1425 he ordered Murdac and his sons beheaded at Stirling.

Notes for Robert Stewart, Duke Of Albany:

Robert held the titles of Earl of Menteith, Earl of Fife, Duke of Albany, Earl of Atholl, Earl of Buchan.

Robert, Earl of Fife and later Duke of Albany and Governor of Scotland, was a man of ruthless ambition. His brother Robert III allowed him authority to run the affairs of state until 1393 when King Robert III reassumed his royal responsibilities for the next six years. Robert III then delegated his authority to his eldest son David. In 1401 David had proven to be so incompetent that Robert III had him arrested and placed in custody of his brother, Robert, where he died. His brother (this) Robert, Duke of Albany, was suspected to be responsible.

Even though (this) Robert, Duke of Albany, was never king, he controlled Scotland for over thirty years during the reigns of three kings.  When Robert's brother John, known as King Robert III, died then (this) Robert, Duke of Albany, became heir presumptive to the throne.  However the King's son, James I, was being held as a prisoner in England and was still uncrowned.  Robert, Duke of Albany, was appointed as governor of Scotland, but assumed far more royal trappings than his appointment warranted.  Robert also did very little to negotiate a ransom for the King's return.  Perhaps this is why James I found Robert's family to be such a threat to his royal rule that, on his return he attempted to have them all executed (see notes on Robert's son, Murdac).

        257.  Elizabeth Mure, Countess Of Strathearn, born Abt. 1315 in Rowallan, Ayrshire, Scotland; died Abt. 1355 in Scotland.  She was the daughter of 514. Sir Adam Mure, Of Rowallan and 515. Janet Mure, Of Ponkelly.

Notes for Robert Stewart, II, King Of Scotland:

Robert was miraculously born by Caesarian section after his pregnant mother was thrown from her horse and died of her injuries.

Robert was first known as Robert the Steward, the 7th High Steward of Scotland.  He was the grandson of King Robert "The Bruce", but is described as lacking the courage and vigour of his grandfather.  During the English imprisonment of King David II of Scotland, Robert ruled in his place.  King David failed to produce any male heirs and on his death the throne passed to (this) Robert the Steward.  When Robert II came to the throne, a fourteen-year truce with England still had twelve years to run, although unofficial warfare with England continued along the border.  Full scale war broke out in 1385 as a by-product of the Hundred Years' War between England and France.  Scotland became involved through assistance to France.  Throughout this period Robert II was ever weak in his control of the state. In 1384 he appointed his heir John, Earl of Carrick (later to become King Robert III), to enforce authority on his behalf.  He died 6 years later.

Notes for Elizabeth Mure, Countess Of Strathearn:

Elizabeth Mure is a shadowy figure of whom little is known. At the time Elizabeth and Robert married, Robert was still only Earl of Strathearn; thus, although Elizabeth became Countess of Strathearn, she was never queen of Scots, since she died before her husband ascended the throne. >From the fact that Robert married again in 1355, we must infer that Elizabeth had died by that date.

The Mure family had held the estate of Rowallan in Cunningham, Ayrshire, Scotland from the thirteenth century.  Elizabeth bore Robert nine children before the papal dispensation of 1347 permitted their marriage and legitmized their issue.  Questions later arose as to whether this legitimization could apply to children of parents who were "within the forbidden degrees of consanguinity".  (Does this mean that Elizabeth Mure and Robert Stewart were related?)  These questions were certainly raised by later claiments to the throne in order to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the Stewart claim.

Notes for Alexander Stewart, Lord Of Badenoch:

Alexander Stewart, Lord of Badenoch, Earl of Ross, and Earl of Buchan, was known as the "Wolf of Badenoch".

Alexander Stewart first intervened in the politics of Morayshire, Scotland in 1370.  He became the king's lieutenant in the north two years later.  In 1382 he married Euphemia Leslie, Countess of Ross, and thus acquired the title of Earl of Ross.  His reign in Morayshire was one of violence, including feuds, cattle raids, and protection rackets.  This was at a time marked by Highland lawlessness.  In 1388 was unseated by his three estates and abandoned his wife, Euphemia.  Alexander was censured by the Bishops of Moray and Ross, but this was not the first time that Alexander had been on the bad side of these bishops.  In 1390, in response, Alexander and a host of "wild, wicked, Highland men" burned the villages of Forres and Elgin in Morayshire, along with the cathedral of Elgin.  It was after this attack that he became known as the "Wolf of Badenoch".  Alexander was forced to appear before his brother, King Robert III, to answer for his crimes, and as penance he was required to help rebuild the cathedral.

[Forres, Morayshire is the ancestral home of the Cuthbert family who appear elsewhere in this family history.]

Notes for Sir Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward Of Scotland:

The first recorded ancestor of the Stewarts was nobly born Breton named Alan, who was a "daipifer" or steward to the Count of Dol in the late eleventh century. Alan the "dapifer" had a son named Flaad who sought advancement in Britain, where he had land on the Welsh Marshes in the reign of Henry I.  Flaad's grandson Walter won the favor of David I, who granted him the barony of Renfrew and appointed him High Steward of Scotland. The office became hereditary and hence the Stewart name.

This Walter Stewart was the sixth holder of title.  This Walter distinguished himself in his loyalty to King Robert the Bruce in the Scottish wars of Independence.  The Bruce rewarded Walter with the hand of his daughter in marriage.  This meant that any children of Walter and Marjorie were potential heirs to the throne of Scotland.

Notes for Marjorie Bruce:

Marjorie was only child of Robert I "the Bruce" King of Scotland from his marriage to Isabella of Mar.  Marjorie was held hostage in the Tower of London by King Edward the Longshanks in order to compel surrender from her father, Robert the Bruce.  Marjorie was later freed and married Sir Walter Stewart who was a young knight and sixth family holder of the High Steward of Scotland. This marriage produced a son Robert Stewart who was to later become Robert II, King of Scotland (1371-90).  Robert's birth was considered something of a miracle since he was delivered by caesarian section Marjorie died from a fall from her horse.

Notes for Robert The Bruce, King Of Scotland:

Bruce, Robert (1274-1329), liberator, and, as Robert I, king of Scotland (1306-1329).  He was originally named Robert de Bruce, and to distinguish him from his father and grandfather, who had the same name, he is often referred to as Robert de Bruce VIII.  He is also called Robert "the Bruce".  As earl of Carrick he paid homage to King Edward I of England, who, in 1296, defeated King John de Baliol and thereafter refused to acknowledge another king of Scotland.  Bruce later abandoned Edward's cause and joined other Scottish leaders in taking up arms for the independence of his country.  In 1299, the year after the Scottish patriot Sir William Wallace was defeated by Edward at Falkirk, Bruce, then still in favor with Edward, was made one of the four regents who ruled the kingdom in the name of Baliol.  In 1305 he was one of those consulted in the decision to make Scotland a province of England.  In 1306 he met an old enemy, the Scottish patriot John Comyn, who was the nephew of Baliol; a quarrel occurred, and Bruce stabbed Comyn. B ruce proclaimed his right to the throne, and on March 27, 1306, he was crowned king at Scone.

Bruce was deposed, however, in 1307 by Edward's army and forced to flee to the Highlands and then to the little island of Rathlin on the coast of Antrim (now in Northern Ireland).  In his absence all his estates were confiscated, and he and his followers were excommunicated.  He continued to recruit followers, however, and in less than two years he wrested nearly all of Scotland from the English.  Bruce again defeated the English in 1314 in the Battle of Bannockburn, twice invaded England, and in 1323 concluded with King Edward II of England a truce for 13 years.  After the accession of King Edward III in 1327, war again broke out, and the Scots won again.  In 1328 they secured a treaty recognizing the independence of Scotland and the right of Bruce to the throne.

In his later years Bruce was stricken with leprosy and lived in seclusion at Cardross Castle, on the northern shore of the Firth of Clyde, where he died. H e was succeeded by his son, David II. Bruce's grandson, Robert II, who succeeded David, was the first king of the Stuart house of English and Scottish royalty.
