Orphaned at an early age, James lived in Glasgow with his great-uncle Duncan Graham and worked in Duncan's butchershop.  Left wife Jane and baby daughter Elizabeth in Glasgow in 1848 - travelled round the world and made money in the California Goldrush before returning to Scotland in 1851. Took his wife and daughter to Australia, arriving in Melbourne in early 1852. Opened butcher's shops in Melbourne (one in Queens St and one in Swanston St) and made a fortune selling provisions to the Australian  gold-prospectors. Started a wool-scouring business on the Yarra River and sent a load of wool to England but the the ship sank and he went broke.  He moved to Sydney and started an abattoir at Homebush where he made and lost a third fortune.  Reportedly unperturbed, he returned to Melbourne to start again, but died suddenly before he could recoup his losses a fourth time.
